Lent 2021

Foundations of Fasting (Matthew 4:1-2)

Fasting is assumed by Jesus (Matthew 6:16-18)

“Self-indulgence is the enemy of gratitude, and self-discipline usually its friends and generator. That is why gluttony is a deadly sin. The early desert fathers believed that a person’s appetites are linked: full stomachs and jaded palates take the edge from our hunger and thirst for righteousness. They spoil the appetite for God.”

Fasting acknowledges we are dependent on God (Matthew 4:4, 1 Corinthians 6:13a)

“We fast to nourish our hunger for God and to reduce our hunger for the world.”

“The greatest enemy of hunger for God is not poison but apple pie. It’s not the banquet of the wicked that dulls our appetite for heaven, but mindless nibbling at the table of the world.”

Fasting can be a sign of repentance (1 Samuel 7:6)

Fasting is a Spiritual Discipline (Holy Habit) (1 Corinthians 9:27)

Fasting helps discern / seek God’s will and favor (Esther 4:16)

  • Regularly
  • Prayerfully
  • Secretly (Matthew 6:16-18)
  • Corporately
  • Creatively
  • Expectantly (Matthew 6:18)
