Come Long Expected Messiah

I. The promised Messiah who will be
A. the Serpent crusher (Gen. 3:15)
B. a prophet/deliverer like Moses (Deut. 18:15-22; 34:9-12)
C. a priest like Melchizedek (Ps. 110:1-4; Zech. 6:12-14)
D. a king like David (2 Sam. 7:12-16; Ps. 89:29; 132:11-12), the humble
king who will proclaim peace to the nations (Zech. 9:9-12; Micah 4)
E. a servant who will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on
earth (Is. 42:1-7)
F. like a son of man but receive all authority and be worshipped by all
nations (Dan. 7:13-14)
G. the virgin born Son of God establishing God’s righteous kingdom (Is.
7:14; 9:6-7; 11:1-16) as He destroys the evil kingdoms that destroy
righteousness (Ps. 2) like a huge rock falling from heaven (Dan. 2:44-45)

II. Gabriel’s Revelation: a pre-Christian prophecy about a murdered leader of the Jews who will be resurrected in three days.

III. The promised Messiah who will be
A. appalling disfigured, despised, suffering, sorrowful (Is. 52:14-53:4)
B. pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities (Is. 53:5)
C. crushed by God (Is. 53:10)
D. crushed by the Serpent (Gen. 3:15)
E. raised to life by God, honored and exalted (Ps. 16:8-11; Is. 53:10-12)

Questions for Discussion:
1. What do people in your circle of unchurched folk say about Jesus?
2. Why do we see both triumphant and suffering prophecies of Messiah?
3. Genesis 3:15 speaks of the “seed of the woman”. But biblically people are called
the son of [their father]. Why does the Bible use this odd phrase?
4. Ponder how we can be like Jesus, prophet, priest, ruler, and servant as the body of
5. Read Isaiah 52:14-53:12 and list what it says about the coming king. Does this
sound like someone you would be attracted to?
6. Romans 16:20 says that we are crushing the Serpent under our feet. How is this
happening today?
7. Think of one concrete way you can overcome evil with good (Rom. 12:21) in the
name of Jesus by the power of the Spirit.
