Big Idea: Our time and energy reveal our loves.

Luke 10:40

This book is an exploration of a feeling. That caught-by-the-throat feeling so many mothers have today of always doing something wrong. And it’s about a conviction I have that this feeling—this widespread, choking cocktail of guilt and anxiety and resentment and regret—is poisoning motherhood for American women today. Lowering our horizons and limiting our minds. Sapping energy that we should have for ourselves and our children. And drowning out thoughts that might lead us, collectively, to formulate solutions. The feeling has many faces, but it doesn’t really have a name. It’s not depression. It’s not oppression. It’s a mix of things, a kind of too-muchness. An existential discomfort. A mess.”

Ephesians 5:15-17

Matthew 22:37-39

We cannot do everything; there is not enough time. Like Mary, therefore, we shall have to choose and choose very deliberately. Life’s affairs will not automatically sort themselves into a true order of priorities. If we do not consciously insist on making “sitting at the Lord’s feet and listening to his word” our number one necessity, a thousand and one other things and duties, all claiming to be prior necessities, will tyrannize our time and energies and rob us of the “good part” in life.”

David W. Gooding

Galatians 2:20

But there is not one of these transformations in which the heart is left without an object. The heart’s desire for an ultimate object may be conquered, but it’s desire to have SOME object is unconquerable. The only way to dispossess the heart of an old affection is through the expulsive power of a new one.”

Thomas Chalmers

1 John 4:19

1. What is getting most of my time?
2. Who / What is getting the best of my energy?
3. What “many things” are crowding my life
4. How can my time and energy reflect a greater love for Jesus?

“The Explusive Power of a New Affection” by Thomas Chalmers

Jesus, I recognize that I am a sinner in need of Your forgiveness. I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and place my trust in You as my Lord and Savior. Please receive me now. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Jesus, save the lost and guide the saved.
